BIO

Dr. Williams completed a bachelor of science in bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. She spent four years working with the urban homeless before returning to school. She earned her doctorate in naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University, a four year, federally-accredited naturopathic medical school in Seattle in 1995. She lectures extensively to both professional and lay audiences on topics including cancer, heart disease, menopause, anxiety and depression and is an author and researcher for several on-line databases of scientific information about natural medicine.

Dr. Williams had a private practice in Vermont and was a long-time volunteer at the local Good Neighbor Health Clinic as well as in rural clinics in Guatemala and Honduras where she studied traditional herbal medicine. She moved to British Columbia in 2008 and now sees patients at her office in the James Bay Community Project building in Victoria. She also mantains a small practice on Cortes Island.

Philosophy of Practice

HEALTH
There is a natural tendency of all life toward health. Without interference, nature will always move in the direction of healing. The process of healing which is innate to the human body is supported and stimulated by the inner and outer environments. True health is present not only in the body but also in the psyche and spirit.

DISEASE
Sometimes the body faces obstacles to health, such as infectious organisms and toxins, that overwhelm its healing abilities. Other times our mechanisms to heal become impaired. This can occur as a result of metabolic, immune or detoxification dysfunctions, or can have its roots in the psyche and spirit. The balance then no longer favors health and healing, and the result at such times is a state of “dis-ease.”

MEDICINE
Nature provides agents to support health, to prevent disease and to stimulate healing. The outer and inner environments created by our lifestyles and habits can prevent disease if healthy foods, regular exercise, stress management and attending to the spirit are all incorporated. When disease takes hold and intervention is required, nutritional and herbal substances can be used as medicines.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
Naturopathic doctors combine these understandings about health and disease, knowledge of physiology and biochemistry, and modern diagnostic tools including physical exam, lab tests and imaging, to identify the sources of disease. Naturopathic medicine employs nutritional, botanical and homeopathic medicines to re-establish health by stimulating the immune system and detoxification pathways, by directly fighting infections, or by promoting specific hormone or neurotransmitter synthesis. These interventions can be used effectively for chronic conditions such as arthritis, allergies, depression, anxiety, diabetes, chronic fatigue, digestive problems, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease, menopausal symptoms, menstrual problems, and cancer. In some cases they are best used in conjunction with conventional medications. Naturopathic medicine can also be an appropriate intervention for non-life-threatening acute ailments such as colds and flus. Annual physical exams and screening lab tests can also be performed by naturopathic doctors.

The traditional medicines used in naturopathy often have long histories of use that provide us with information about safety and efficacy. Many of the most commonly used herbs and nutrients have more recently been the subjects of scientific research attempting to better understand their biological activities and medicinal properties, in many cases verifying what was known historically.

Scheduling an Appointment

WHAT TO EXPECT

An initial visit with Dr. Williams will include an extensive history-taking, covering your health history, your family history and risk factors, and your current health concerns. A physical exam will be performed and lab tests ordered when appropriate. You will then participate in the formation of a protocol that might include specific nutritional and lifestyle changes, prescriptions for nutritional and herbal supplements or homeopathic remedies, and a plan for monitoring your progress.

Occasionally, naturopathic medicine will not be appropriate for your health concerns and you will be referred to a different provider. Collaboration and information-sharing with your primary care provider or other health care providers can take place with your consent.
